They live in close touch with nature – and their tireless commitment, then and now, makes them true heroes of nature conservation. One year after the fall of the wall, the Rhön Mountains became a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Karl-Friedrich Abe was head of the reserve for thirty years. Today, Ulrike Schade heads up the Thuringian administration of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve.
