Federal report on practical experiences with REACH requirements for nanomaterials - five years after entry into force.
Five years after the nano-specific information requirements in the REACH Regulation entered into force, the Federal Environment Ministry asked the Federal Office for Chemicals (Bundesstelle für Chemikalien, BfC) to give an initial assessment. During the review, it became clear that the nano-specific information requirements were a good first step towards improving the data needed for risk assessment. However, based on their experience, the authorities concluded that many registration dossiers for nanomaterials do not currently provide the required data. To ensure full compliance with the principle of "no data, no market", the requirements need to be revised further.
Substance identities and properties still unclear
The authorities often found that many registration dossiers lack comprehensive data on nanoform identity and properties. In addition, both the registrants and the authorities are facing unresolved challenges with grouping similar nanoforms. Another problem is that the lack of internationally standardised test methods that are sufficiently adapted to the unique characteristics of nanomaterials.
