The International Climate Initiative (IKI)

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) is a key German government tool for international climate policy. Since 2008, the initiative has funded projects worldwide in the fields of climate action, adaptation to climate change, protection of natural carbon sinks and conservation of biodiversity. The IKI supports countries eligible for official development assistance (ODA) in developing and implementing ambitious climate measures. It links climate action with sustainable development, social transformation and international development.

The Federal Environment Ministry and the Federal Foreign Office share responsibility for the implementation of the IKI. The initiative is an important component of the German government's financing commitment to international action on the climate and biodiversity. Under the IKI, the German government works closely with international organisations, development banks, scientific institutions, businesses and civil society partners to implement international climate and biodiversity targets.

In the area of international energy transition, the IKI prioritises support for projects to expand renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, build up modern electricity systems and decarbonise industry and transport. At the same time, it strengthens political and institutional frameworks for the long-term success of transformation.

The Federal Environment Ministry also provides support and guidance to international projects on adaptation to climate change under the International Climate Initiative.
