The 17th Petersberg Climate Dialogue 2026 in Berlin emphasized the central role of the Paris Agreement as the foundation of international cooperation, especially in times of geopolitical tensions and ongoing energy crises. To prepare for COP31 in Antalya, Carsten Schneider, Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, COP31 President-designate Murat Kurum, and COP31 President-designate for negotiations Chris Bowen brought together ministers and high-level representatives from 31 countries and the EU, as well as representatives of international organizations and the business community.
A key focus was the link between climate action, energy security, and economic competitiveness: the expansion of renewable energy, electrification, and investments in climate-friendly technologies were highlighted as both economic opportunities and strategic responses to the fossil fuel energy crisis. The participating countries underlined the urgency of accelerating climate action measures, particularly to keep the 1.5°C target within reach, as well as the need to close ambition and implementation gaps in nationally determined contributions (NDCs). At the same time, the importance of adaptation finance, multilateral cooperation, and stronger mobilization of private investment was emphasized.
