Headed up by the German-Chilean presidency, the members of the Climate Club are meeting today on the margins of the international climate negotiations in Bonn. The meeting, which will be attended by the Brazilian COP30 Presidency, will focus on the current overall conditions for the global decarbonisation of the industrial sector as well as measures that can contribute to the development of strong lead markets for climate-friendly basic materials like green steel and green cement. The now 46 member countries of the Climate Club want to play a pioneering role in this area.

The current aim is to harmonise and significantly streamline reporting requirements for companies internationally in the context of carbon pricing and other climate measures. To this end, more standardised metrics for emissions reporting in the industrial sector will be defined, building on preliminary work by the OECD as part of the Inclusive Forum on Carbon Mitigation Approaches (IFCMA), so as to develop common core elements of reporting systems (known as MRV systems: measurement, reporting, verification). Another focus will be on continuing to draw up joint guidelines to prevent carbon leakage.

The work of the Climate Club has brought about significant progress in recent months: a high-level group of renowned international economists and climate experts will advise the body in future. At COP30, it will make recommendations for specific policy instruments to speed up industrial decarbonisation.

Since its launch at COP29, the Global Matchmaking Platform (GMP) has become established as a key support instrument of the Climate Club for emerging economies and developing countries. It provides tailored support for decarbonising emissions-intensive industries, for example by improving nationally determined contributions (NDCs), establishing robust MRV systems, creating decarbonisation roadmaps for steel and cement and identifying suitable financing mechanisms. This includes research to determine which waste types could be used as alternative fuels in the cement industry, the development of sector-specific measures under NDC 3.0 and the identification of decarbonisation pathways for energy-intensive industries. Countries receiving support include Argentina, Chile, Cambodia, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Morocco, Turkey and Ukraine. With a growing network of partners, the GMP facilitates access to technical and financial support and helps achieve ambitious climate targets.

The Climate Club is a forum that now has 46 member states and brings together ambitious industrialised nations, emerging economies and developing countries to discuss decisive issues at the nexus of climate action, economic growth and industrial policy for resilient and low-carbon production processes and to develop joint solutions.
