The National Biodiversity Strategy 2030 (NBS 2030)

| Minutes and reports | Nature and Biological Diversity

In December 2022, all signatory states agreed at the UN Biodiversity Conference to either draw up new national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) or to update any existing ones. Germany meets this obligation with its National Biodiversity Strategy 2030 (NBS 2030) and also contributes to achieving the goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

The NBS 2030 was adopted by the Federal Cabinet on 18 December 2024 and brings together the key issues related to biodiversity conservation in a total of 21 action areas with 64 targets under a single strategy. In addition to overarching biodiversity objectives, including species protection and ecosystem restoration, it also addresses other current issues such as urban nature, climate change, digitalisation, expansion of the use of renewable energy and economic and financial issues.

The NBS 2030 not only outlines the strategy, it places a special focus on implementation. Around 250 specific national measures are detailed in a first action plan. A review will be carried out in 2027. Further measures will be identified in a second action plan for the period up to 2030 to ensure that the targets are achieved by 2030.

The strategy was already submitted in draft form to the CBD Secretariat at the 16th UN Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia. Once adopted by the Cabinet, the final version of the NBS 2030 was translated into English and uploaded to the CBD platform (online reporting tool).
