US President Donald Trump issued an executive order yesterday announcing the withdrawal of the US from 66 international organizations. The Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider responded with the statement below:
"The Trump administration’s decision to also step away from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change does not come as a surprise. The IPCC brings together the most distinguished climate scientists from all over the world. In 2007 it was rightly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. During the climate conference at the end of last year it became apparent that the US is alone with its stance on climate change. All other parties have committed to doing everything in their power to limit global warming in this century to 1.5 degrees. A number of new alliances were forged in Belém to address international carbon markets, accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels and, most notably, combat fake news on climate issues."
