The member states of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) are negotiating measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in London.

This week, the international community has an important decision to make regarding climate action in shipping. Member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are negotiating in London on measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Federal Transport Ministry is leading the German delegation in the extraordinary session.

Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider commented: "International shipping has already set out to achieve net-zero by 2050. We now have the opportunity to secure this path with a concrete international decision. This is an important step in climate policy, because shipping accounts for around three percent of GHG emissions.  But it is also an opportunity for technological pioneers like Germany to be among those leading the way in the development of new technologies and building infrastructure for net-zero shipping. Any countries that do not want to be a part of these efforts ultimately harm themselves."

Further information:

In spring, members of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed a strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships. The IMO Net-Zero Framework (NZF) contains a global pricing mechanism for emissions. This aims to gradually reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used on board ships. Revenues are estimated at 11 to 13 billion US dollars per year and will be used, for example, to promote zero-emission fuels and support a fair and balanced transition, especially in developing countries. The requirements are expected to be adopted in the IMO extraordinary session by Friday.
